  1. This is basically a thread for serious topics. I guess every page or two we'll change the serious topic, so we can cover more things, rather than make a different thread for each one.

Today's topic: English, and it's decline.

There's two reasons I hate the internet. Porn, and chatspeak.
I won't get fully into this (I already did an essay on it), but I really think it's something that needs to be seriously thought about. I'm getting really pissed at people who type lyk dis n frums w/o dem ful stoppy tins nd capitls n stff jst 1 big runon sentnc dat mks no snse 2 nebody bt dem

OR PEOPLE WHO LEAVE THEIR CAPS LOCK KEY ON DAY IN AND DAY OUT, BECAUSE THEY THINK SOMEHOW YOU'LL LISTEN TO THEM IF THEY SOUND LIKE INCOMPETANT MORONS. IT'S IGNORANT, OBNOXIOUS, AND STUPID. I HATE IT.

The only time I believe it's acceptable to use chatspeak (Or chtspk, for the more retarded readers), is on a moile phone, when you have to keep messages under a certain amount of characters. None of this MSN bullshit, or writing it in exams and essays (I'm not fucking kidding, I've seen it. It brought one of my teachers to tears). I hate it in forums. I mean, how much time does it really save? It takes me longer to type like a moron, because I have to think what would be the most ridiculous way to possibly type something. And even if you're so used to talking like a douchebag that it is faster, a) Hand me a gun so I can shoot you in the face, and b), you're really giving up any chance of being taken seriously.
I don't know about you guys, but I have a lot more respect for people who know their first language and can use it properly.

Another thing, I HATE contractions. I hate "lol". If you're laughing, write "hahaha" or soemthing. My mum thinks that's retarded, she has become a "lol"er. The poor bitch. Too many people are like

They use it even when they aren't laughing, which I consider lying. Which is punishable by death in Jaydey-land.

Having said that, I do say "rofl" sometimes, but it's really better than "INRROTFLMAOBKBOOMCG. STR?" (I'm not really rolling on the floor laughing my ass off, but kinda bent over on my chair giggling. Same thing right?), which is what I would say if I was being entirely honest.

Ok, rant over. I just hate chatspeak so much. Post your opinions and when I get bored I'll put up the next topic.

  2. i hate when people use bad grammer
like in my class ill give some examples of things my friend caeron has said

    them cars be wack
ya'll cricked b havin' yhem whack phones
mines is done(note the use of mines mine is already a possesivepronoun you dont need to add an s)

i think the reason for the over use of bad grammer is rap
rap is generally a fast tempoed kind of music therefore they have to make the words smaller and listining to to much rap (raping ) leads to the habbit of bad grammer wich is hard to correct

(note this is not exactly what the topic is about but it kind of is)

    Hahaha

I love that post because it is like the master of all things hypocritical. No offense, but I don't see any capitals or full stops. Which kinda makes you as bad as what I'm talking about. Although your spelling is pretty good. I won't go and pick out the mistakes, but it's better than normal.

    'lol' :P

Big issue in my land, when people like try to sing over the internet, when really they just add in the extra vowel here and there. Don't get me wrong, im all for a sing song but not for when they drag it on AGES. I order them shot in the face.

  6. The use of chatspeak drives me nuts. It takes me a while to figure out what the hell some posters are saying. If I don't get it right away I'll just go on to the next post. This means I may miss your relevent point.

I teach at a college and have seen some pretty bad writting. How can someone get all the way through high school and not be able to put their thoughts down on paper in a logical way? I was taught that if when you read what you've written and it doesn't sound like a person talking it is wrong. Unfortunetly what I've seen does sound like the person who wrote it talking because they don't know how to speak properly. (Sigh)

Wheather that is from rap or not I don't know. But before I speculate further I must point out that I am blind to what a person's ethnic origins are. (In other words I am in no way a racist.) I beleive that anybody can learn to speak and write in a way to get their thoughts know.
Having said that I think that rap has had an influence on how younger people talk. Rap has grown out of a style from mainly disadvantaged young men of color of expressing themselves . Unfortunalty those same young men either didn't have access to quality teachers or didn't want to learn. I lean more toward the "didn't want to learn" camp as there were many young people in history that taught themselves. Abe Lincoln comes to mind. If you want to learn something there are always ways to do so. Books from the library or finding someone that knows what you want to learn and asking them to teach you.

I never worry about spelling because I can't do it myself. I stump spellcheck on a regular basis. This just makes me find other ways to say something and improves my vocabulary.

I guess that's enough for now from me. What are your thoughts?

Spelling bothers me only when the person isn't trying. Little typos here and there are nothing, but when people deliberately spell things wrong it shits me.
    Like:
    "taht
    lyke
    tihs
    brudda"

    And so on.

Casey, I love you. Marry me please.
Wait... first I have to divorce aoikath. That bitch hasn't even spoken to me in months. :(

Way to marry me and leave me.

  8. Anybody can learn to spell words the same way all the time.
It takes real artistic talent to be creative in spelling. ;-)
I've learned to use a larger vocabulary to get around spelling problems
